By Hilary Steel, Civil Celebrant

“I thought of you today at first, I felt quite sad,

Then I smiled, as I’m lucky you’re my Dad.

A child grows up surrounded by Fatherly love

Now when I think of you, I simply look above.

I thought of you today and closed my eyes to see

Memories of this little child, sitting on your knee.

Your arms wrapped around me, softening my cries,

The whole world ahead, beaming in your eyes.

I thought of you today and remembered how you cared

And how you became the light, when of the dark I was scared.

Your power to protect, fills me with pride

I know deep down, that you’re still here by my side.

I thought of you today, as people gather round

And smile that now you have, your own peace found.

Our conversations are now over, but I am not afraid

I understand dear Dad, there’s no way you could have stayed.

I thought of you today, sitting with my Mum

Talking together, of all the things you’ve done.

I’m lucky to have you, as my loving Dad

I thought of you today, and now I feel less sad.”
